This monthly workshop covers one topic per month, from the basics of using graphite pencils to drawing human portraits!

Workshop Schedule

Workshop #1 - #4 : building foundations

The first 4 workshops will focus on building the foundations for graphite pencil techniques and freehand drawing skills. 



Introduction to Graphite Pencil

Unleash your creativity with the Introduction to Graphite Pencil workshop. This foundation-building class is the perfect way to kick off your journey into freehand drawing. Through this workshop, you will learn about different lead hardness, blending techniques, and how to create shadows and textures with graphite pencils. Beginner Freehand Drawing II :

Drawing an object in real life

Ready to take your drawing skills to the next level? In Beginner Freehand Drawing II: drawing an object in real life, we will continue building on the foundational skills learned in our first course. This time, we will focus on drawing simple shaped objects from real life, mastering the basics of composition, shape, shadows, and textures. With the step-by-step approach and expert guidance, you'll be amazed at the progress you make in just a short time.



Beginner Freehand Drawing I :

Drawing from a reference photo

Looking to start your journey into freehand drawing? Our Beginner Freehand Drawing I course is the perfect place to begin. This course will teach you the basics of drawing from a reference photo, including breaking down the subject into simple shapes and getting the proportions accurate. 



Art of Speed Drawing:

Drawing in 3 min, 10 min & 30 min

Unlock your creativity and join me in the Art of Speed Drawing: drawing in 3min, 10min, and 30min. It sounds challenging, but you'll surprise yourself with how quickly you can improve with practice. This is a fun and fast-paced way to develop your observational drawing skills while having a great time. Join us today to find out what you're capable of!

Workshop #5 - #11 
Portrait Fundamentals:
Mastering Facial Features

The next 7 workshops will focus on everything you need to know about drawing human portraits. We will learn how to draw each facial feature first, then combine everything we learned into practice in the last two workshops. 



Eye for Detail: Draw Like a Pro

Take your art to the next level with the Eye for Detail: Draw Like a Pro workshop. During this workshop, you'll gain invaluable insights into the art of drawing eyes and learn how to create realistic and expressive human portraits. We'll cover everything from eye anatomy to the art of capturing emotions through eye movement. By the end of the workshop, you'll have the skills and confidence to tackle even the most challenging of human portraits.

Mirror Mirror Self-Portrait

Ready for a challenge? The Mirror Mirror Self-Portrait workshop is designed to help you put your newfound art skills to the test. We'll work together to create a self-portrait using a mirror to ensure that your artwork captures your unique essence. We will go through the art of composition and facial proportions to ensure you have the guidance you need to create something truly special.

Workshop Details


Workshops are open to anyone who wants to draw and learn freehand drawing art from age 10 through adults. If you are a beginner or new to graphite pencil art, start from the Introduction to Graphite Pencil workshop.

Art LeveL

All art styles, skill levels, and art goals are welcome. If you are new to graphite pencil, I highly recommend taking the Introduction to Graphite Pencil workshop before taking other workshops. Each workshop builds skillsets needed for the next workshop.


Pick your workshop from two available session times! All workshops are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. All classes are 2 hours long, and it is $46/class.

Need more time to finish your work? Join the 2-hour open studio class in the following week for more individualized instructions.


All workshops and open studio classes are held at Tanigawa Studio in downtown McKinney TX.


Below is the supply list for the workshop. What is included in the supply kit is marked with * next to each item. Please bring as many items as you can from the optional and helpful supply list. Currently, the shopping cart for the kit is separate from the booking checkout. Please purchase the supply kit in a separate transaction.

  • Graphite Pencils 2H, HB, B, 2B, 4B, & 6B*

  • Vinyl Eraser, preferably dust-free*

  • Kneaded Eraser*

  • Blending Tools such as Stumps, Tortillons, and/or Charmois - Please get an assortment of small, medium and large sizes*

  • Sand Paper Pad (for cleaning/sharpening Stumps and Tortillons*

  • Sketchbook, 60lbs+ paperweight, 30+ sheets, and 7x10 or larger*

  • For workshop #2, Beginner Freehand Drawing I: drawing from a reference photo, bring a reference photo of a simple shaped object you would like to draw printed in black and white on letter-sized paper. 

  • For workshop #3, Beginner Freehand Drawing II: drawing an object in real life, bring a small, simple-shaped object you would like to draw.

  • For workshop #4, Art of Speed Drawing II: drawing in 3 min, 10 min & 30 min, bring up to 3 small, simple-shaped objects you would like to draw.

Please select a workshop time that best suits your schedule. The AM session is from 10-12 pm and the PM session is from 6-8 pm. The help sessions held on the week after the workshop are optional. Due to the limited seat availability, please note that there will be NO REFUNDS.
